My perception of individual growth of the members of my family, including myself, is disjointed, abstract, and persists for years. Within my paintings, I capture growth as well as the lapsing of time through portrait paintings of each figure. Though their physical appearance has changed slightly as they aged, my perception of who they are has changed even more as I’ve watched their character strengthen. Whether it has been over coming addiction, battling struggles from a young age, or just becoming a more full individual, the people I have chosen to be in my series have inspired me with their determination to overcome hardship. Through art, I aim to honor my loved ones and inspire others through their stories. In this series, I paint two portraits of the individual. The first portrait portrays the past, before their growth. The second image shows my perception of them now. I then weave them together to allude to change over time and how that can change how we view the individual. As well as the woven portraits, I also have a triptych of self portraits to represent the growth I have seen in myself.
